IF I WOKE UP BLACK

The Irish Farrells

As our country struggles with ‘critical race theory’ (CRT) and a portion of our country wants to forget teaching our history, in our schools, maybe, just maybe, those who want to forget our history, should look into their own family’s past and remind themselves of their own hu-man-i-ty and welcome others who are different from us into the human race. IF I SHOULD WAKE UP BLACK
By Russ Farrell

If I should wake up black,
This old white skin gone off my back,
I’d just roll over in the sack
And yawn a bit. That’s a simple fact.
My wife wouldn’t care, ‘cause she’s a lack…
She can’t see white; she can’t see black.
She loves one guy, that guy is me;
She’d love me green or Cherokee.
She’s pretty smart, that’s plain to see,
	She says, “Folks are hu-man-i-ty.”
My kids wouldn’t care. They’d say, “Hi, Dad,
The weather’s good, but the fishing’s bad.”
My family’s grown. I’m proud, you see:
We’ve come up from white, to humanity!
That’s pretty good for Killarney clogs,
Who crawled out of the sea into Irish bogs.
And at long, long last have found a place,
As full-fledged members of the human race.
