But how are they going to save the fish if their owners, Penny and Max, were going to come back from school in…. 45 MINUTES!! Read Quiny and Mango, the Fish Accident to see how these two animals save six fish.
Book 1
Quiny’s owners, Penny and Max, said goodbye to Quiny then left the house for school. Quniy’s nose twitched. “The coast is clear,” said Quiny. Quiny opened her own cage with her teeth and hopped out. (She’s done that many times before.) Quiny ran into the living room where the fish tank was. There were six colorful fish. Their names were Flipzy, Wipzy, Jipzy, Snaple, Crackle and Pop.
Quiny’s ears twitched. That was not a good sign. She knew someone was coming. Who was it? Then the door opened, and Penny and Max came in. Oh, no! Thought Quiny and ran under the couch.
“Max, where did you leave your backpack?” asked Penny. Mango, the golden retriever, barked excitedly. “We’re going to be so late!” Right next to the couch was Max’s backpack. “Oh, there it is!” said Max. Max picked up his book that was on the counter and went on his knees and shoved his book in his backpack.’
“Ewww! There’s a dust bunny under here!” said Max. I’m not gross! Thought Quiny angrily. And I am most certainly not dust! Penny looked at Max and said, “We really need to clean under the couch sometime, don’t we? But we really have to go! Moms waiting in the car, and I’m guessing she’s getting inpatient!”
As they shut the door behind them, Quiny came out of her hiding spot just to realize that Mango had knocked over the fish tank. Water spilled everywhere. “Mango!” yelled Quiny. “What did you do!?” “What did I do?” asked Mango, confused. “Look behind you!” Mango turned around. “Oh no!” he barked. “I guess I got so excited that Penny and Max came back that my tail knocked over the fish tank!”
“There are six fish on the carpet,” said Quiny. “What are we going to do?!” Quiny’s mind raced with thoughts. Penny and Max were going to be miserable if they found out that their fish died.
An idea pops up in Quiny’s head. “I know!” she shouted. Quiny ran into the kitchen and tried to jump up onto the kitchen counter, but instead just bonked her head. “Oh, carrots!” said Quiny angrily, rubbing her head with her paw. Mango pressed himself up against the counter and said, “Jump onto my back, Quiny.” Quiny did. She jumped up onto Mango’s back, then she quickly jumped onto the counter and made it. “Yay!” said Mango excitedly and waged his tail. Quiny looked around for the sink.
There it is, thought Quiny, hopping over to the sink. Quiny pawed at the handle and the sink turned on then she said to Mango, “Quick! Go grab the fishes!” Mango ran out of the kitchen and then came back a few seconds later. “Tish fash tast gud,” Mango said with his mouth full of fish.
“Don’t eat them! Spit them in the sink!” I hope he didn’t swallow one of the fishes! Thought Quiny concerned. Mango raised his head high and opened his mouth, so the fish could pour out into the sink.
Oh, no! They didn’t think that all the fish would go down the drain! “Mango! Oh, no! We need to call 822!” said Quiny.
“Hello this is 822 how may I help you today?” a voice said.
“Six fish accidentally fell down the drain! We need a plumber! Asap!” Mango said. “Address please?” asked the voice. “We live in a big building next to another big building in an apartment. And there are numbers on the door. There are five numbers. Actually six,” said Mango confused.
“What numbers?” asked the voice. “I think it’s one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. Except not in that order. Like I said, seven numbers. Or was it six numbers? I can’t remember!” yelled Mango, frustrated. “That’s okay, we have enough information. We’ll be there right away!” Beeeep…..!! Mango hung up.
Twenty minutes later, a handy man hamster knocked on the door. Quiny opened the door. “Sorry that I’m late! I went to the wrong apartment. It was very unfortunate, when the lady opened the door. She screamed, then fainted. I think she was scared of me.
How could she be afraid of such a cute thing like me? You know what? She probably thought I was a rat. Most people are scared of rats,” said the hamster. “But let’s get down to business. Where’s the fish?” “Down the drain of course,” said Mango.
Quiny, Mango and handyman hamster went into the kitchen. Handyman hamster got to work on the drain while Mango watched carefully and Quiny got a bowl with water to put the fish in. After five minutes Crackle, Pop and Flipzy were in the bowl of water Quiny had prepared. After another ten minutes all the fish were in the bowl.
But the one problem was that Penny and Max were going to come home in 45 minutes. “I was so frightened!” said Crackle. “Yes. It was verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry…… scary,” agreed Pop. They had to listen to Pop say verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry…… for 30 minutes. So, there is only 15 minutes left before Penny and Max come home!
“The fish tank!” said Mango. “It’s broken!” But the handyman hamster was still there. Maybe he’ll fix it? “Handyman hamster can you in exactly 5 minutes fix the fish tank over there?” asked Quiny pointing.
“Yes. But that will be three peanuts,” said the handyman hamster. “Deal,” said Mango. “I’ll go get the peanuts from the cupboard while you start to work,” said Quiny. “Okay,” said the handyman hamster.
“Can I help to?” asked Mango with puppy-dog-eyes. “Please, please, please?” “Mango. You can’t,” said Quiny. “Why?” asked Mango. “Because you mess everything up all the time! Like, for example, the fish tank!” said Quiny angrily.
“Alright, alright. No more fighting. Mango yes you can help. Quiny go get those peanuts please. I’m starving,” said the handyman hamster.
Quincy started to hop into the kitchen but then remembered something and said, “How rude of me! I never even asked for your name.” “Well, if you really want to know. It’s Cheesy,” said the handyman hamster. “How does this relate to getting Cheeses peanuts?” asked Mango. “And sense you guys are talking about names, Penny and Max are going to be here any minute now,” said Mango impatiently.
Two minutes later Cheesy left. “There!” said Quiny excitedly. “They won’t suspect a thing!” The doorknob twisted. “They’re coming in! Hurry! Go back into your cage!” Mango barked. Quiny bounced over to her cage and hopped in. Then she reached her head out and grabbed the cage door in her teeth and closed the cage.
“Oh no!” said Quiny. “What about the fish? They’re still in the little bowl! Mango, pick them up in the bowl and put them into the fish tank!” Quiny said. Mango nodded and ran out of the room.
“Where home!” Penny sang in her beautiful, choir voice. Did Mango put the fish in the fish tank quick enough? Thought Quiny. I hope he did. Quiny heard Max say hello to Flipzy, Jipzy, Wipzy, Crackle, Snaple and Pop. Phew! Quiny sighed.
Penny came into the bedroom and opened up Quiny’s cage and pulled Quiny out. Penny carried her into the living room and sat on the couch and stroked Quiny’s back. Quiny saw the fishes in the tank. “Way to go, Mango!” Quiny told Mango when Max and Penny weren’t paying attention. Quiny gave Mango a paw-five. “Maybe you don’t mess up everything after all!” Mango smiled and wagged his tail happily.
